North Korea began 2018 by reaching out to Seoul ahead of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics next month. But there is little reason to believe that the stand-off over nuclear weapons testing and development between North Korea and the United States will end anytime soon. Denuclearisation is not on the table, and insults and baiting between Kim Jong-un and President Donald Trump have only increased the level of tension and sense of danger.
The North Korean regime's core strategic goal remains possession of an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reliably delivering a nuclear weapon to anywhere in the United States. Strong international – and particularly US – opposition to this means the risk of strategic miscalculation, and unintended and sudden escalation persists. This makes it vital that companies identify early warning signs of conflict and prepare for a range of outcomes ahead of time.
In this briefing we will discuss the implications of the latest developments, and assess the future security environment on the Korean Peninsula. The event will take the form of a briefing and roundtable discussion. If you are unable to join person, we will also broadcast as a webinar and make a podcast available. Preference will be given to SIAS clients, corporate security and intelligence professionals.
