The security and political situation in Iraq is changing – again. Iraqi and Kurdish forces – variously backed by the US and Iran – have retaken Islamic State-held territory. With a common enemy routed from the battlefield, long-existing divisions within the alliance are resurfacing.
The question of Kurdish independence and territorial control has come to the fore. And the government in Baghdad will need to think about what to do with Iranian-linked Shia militias that helped it confront Islamic State. Wider geopolitical dynamics – not least involving Saudi Arabia and Iran – will also prove critical in the reconstruction and future stability of Iraq. Elections also lie ahead in spring 2018.
We will discuss the implications of all these developments, to assess the future security and political environment in Iraq and Iraqi Kurdish region. The event will take the form of a briefing and roundtable discussion. Preference will be given to SIAS clients and security professionals. If you are unable to join in person, we will also broadcast on a webinar and make a podcast available.
