Supporting people with learning disabilities - Risk Advisory and the Fastnet Race

On 3 August 2019, non-executive director Bill Waite will be raising funds for Mencap by taking part in the Fastnet Race, a famous biennial offshore yacht race organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club.

This challenge involves racing over 608 nautical miles (1,126 km) off the coast of the UK, through demanding conditions. Starting off in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, the route follows the southern coastline of England westward down the English channel before rounding Land’s End, then crossing the Celtic Sea, rounding the Fastnet Rock off the southwest coast of Ireland back along a largely reciprocal route, rounding the Isles of Scilly before finishing up at Plymouth.

Bill is anticipating a tough physical challenge: “Think of running a dozen marathons over four or five days with people throwing buckets of ice-cold water over you, and you might get a sense of what it’s supposed to be like.”
