CV Lies 2017

The Risk Advisory Group is pleased to present CV Lies 2017 which studied 5,000 CVs - identifying cases where candidates are providing inaccurate or false information on their CVs.

<strong>CV Lies 2017</strong>

The Risk Advisory Group has been providing employee screening services to organisations for 20 years. Year-on-year we have seen a consistently growing number of cases where candidates are providing inaccurate or false information on their CVs.

This year, we sampled 5,000 CVs. Eighty percent contained one or more discrepancy - up by ten percent compared to our data last year. Discrepancies were most frequently related to educational qualifications and information about employment history.

As CV lies are on the increase, it is essential that a robust employee screening programme is in place to support organisations’ hiring processes. 

CV Lies 2017  highlights the extent of the problems that employers need to be aware of when hiring new candidates.

Key Findings

  • 38% of the cases analysed related to inaccurate or falsified CVs of 25-32 year olds.

  • CV discrepancies relate to candidates’ academic background (57%) and employment history (59%). We have started to see more candidates trying to pass off ‘bogus’ degrees obtained from a degree mill, as genuine and an increasing use of virtual offices by fraudsters, to provide individuals with a fake employment history and reference.

  • 21% of candidates inflate their job titles in attempt to climb the career ladder

  • 12% of candidates falsified their grades. 

  • With the introduction of the regulatory reference regime in March 2017, hiring firms have up to 6 weeks to respond to a reference request. Hiring firms will have to plan well in advance when hiring SMRs/CRs and anticipate delaying a start date, where references are delayed.
